Editing
your Manuscript
Editing
and revising is where your writing really comes into
its own. It is the most important step to learn if
you want to write professional quality fiction.
There are a couple
of books I can recommend. First is Self-Editing
for Fiction Writers
.
Next is Strunk and White's Elements of Style
.
It is important
to remember that you are not just writing to please yourself,
but also to grab the attention of an editor or agent. As
such, spelling, grammar and punctuation are absolutely essential
if you wish to be taken seriously as a writer. But don't
fear, there are lots of excellent spell checkers out there
and workshops like the Online
Writers Workshop or
Critters can really
help you home in on your weaknesses so you can work
on them.
Most people
prefer to print out a copy of their rough draft to work on
and this is how I work as well. The reason to get away from
the computer is to quell the urge to fiddle endlessly with
things. If you have a hard copy it is easier to mark what
isn't working and keep going. The next step for me is to
go through the rough regions of the text and fix all the
little problems I noted on the hard copy. This is the stage
where any glaring plot holes need to be fixed as well.
Now, at
this point, you should have a pretty serviceable story. I
like to run it through the OWW again and maybe do some reading
in the style and mood I want for the piece and then do another
pass just refining things and smoothing out the rough spots.
